Outdated Tech Hinders U.S. Manufacturers in Hiring and Retaining Workers

A new report, the 2025 America's State of Manufacturing by Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence division in the Americas, reveals that outdated technology is a significant barrier for manufacturers in attracting and retaining workers, with 72% of manufacturers agreeing. The report also highlights the widespread belief in technological change, with 96% of companies expecting transformations in their operations within the next five years.

The report indicates a mixed view on the U.S. workforce's ability to meet future demands. While half of manufacturers express high confidence, 28% worry that workforce challenges may hinder reshoring efforts. Outdated perceptions of manufacturing, uncertainty, and adp gaps are identified as threats to long-term growth in the industry.

Investment in AI is prevalent, with nearly all manufacturers engaged in such initiatives. Sixty-five percent believe AI will help maintain or grow their workforce. However, only 8% of manufacturers feel their companies are doing enough to support reskilling, with key gaps in problem-solving, digital literacy, and legacy equipment skills.

The report underscores the need for manufacturers to address outdated technology, improve workforce training, and enhance their image to attract new talent. While uncertainty, particularly around tariffs, is a top concern, manufacturers remain optimistic about the potential of technology to drive growth and maintain their workforce.
