Situated in a picturesque Cornish valley, overlooking the tranquil Camel Estuary, a stunning family abode named Padstow House emerges from the collaboration between Sadie Snelson Architects and YJCA. This beachfront beauty, nestled amidst a cluster of farm buildings, caters to a lively bunch seeking an open-plan kitchen/living area, cosy bar, and soft seating space, among other amenities.

The architects aimed to simplify daily routines for the family, mixing practical life hacks with stunning aesthetics. Take, for instance, the laundry shoot connecting from the first-floor hall to the laundry room or the larder that opens directly to the garden and front driveway for convenient deliveries. Intricate storage solutions in hallways and a side entrance perfect for beach-goers with wetsuits and gear complete the functional yet sophisticated design.

The two-story house cleverly adapts to its sloping site, minimizing visual impact on neighbouring properties and merging with the landscape using local slate. An ancient farmhouse wall, repurposed as an external courtyard, adds a historical touch. Meanwhile, the first-floor bedrooms assume a traditional barn form, blending in with nearby agricultural buildings. Spacious terraces, offering stellar views of the coastline, elevate the living spaces.

Privacy is paramount for the west elevation, which faces neighbouring properties. Here, a sturdy stone wall keeps prying eyes at bay, while cleverly positioned service accommodation acts as a protective buffer. Entering the home, one is greeted by a surprising scene: a breathtaking view of the estuary, previously concealed behind the stone wall, showcasing the architects' knack for captivating spacial design.

The ground floor boasts hefty walls enclosing the main living area, providing a sense of shelter and security. Niches within these walls accommodate stoves, bars, storage, and window seats, creating intimate, welcoming nooks. On the first floor, bathrooms are tucked away within compact 'boxes' to ensure privacy, with side windows providing ample daylight and outdoor views.

With a polished concrete and timber parquet flooring, unpainted plaster wall finishes, and unlacquered brass ironmongery, the interior boasts a classy, yet earthy appeal that ages beautifully. Notable environmental features include high insulation levels, an efficient MVHR system, air source heat pumps connected to underfloor heating, and strategically placed window openings that leverage Cornwall's picture-perfect weather.

The clients, keen on a hands-on approach, took it upon themselves to build the project alongside a local craftsman, further influencing the project's unique character. As a byproduct of this collaboration, Padstow House stands as a refreshing example of innovative architecture and sustainable design elegantly blending with the natural surroundings of the Cornish coast.
