People are taking initiative in their own hands
In the heart of Germany, the Bürgerenergiegenossenschaft (BEG) Kraichgau is making significant strides in promoting renewable energy and climate protection. This community-led cooperative is revolutionising the energy sector by facilitating citizen participation in energy projects, particularly solar parks.
The BEG Kraichgau's remit extends beyond developing and managing solar energy projects. It actively encourages citizen involvement in energy transition efforts, effectively democratising the shift towards sustainable energy. Moreover, the cooperative works tirelessly to enhance awareness and acceptance of climate protection measures within the community through public forums and direct communication.
One of the most notable projects under the BEG Kraichgau's purview is the photovoltaic plant in Eppingen, which, upon completion, is expected to generate electricity for over 21,000 households annually. Another significant project is the Agri-Photovoltaic plant in Bad Rappenau, a pioneering initiative of international significance.
The cooperative began its journey 15 years ago in a district of Sinsheim and has since grown to include several subsidiary companies, employing 14 people. It is now active in three sectors: PV systems on communal buildings, public charging stations for electric vehicles, and electric car sharing projects. The cooperative has even launched its first electric car sharing project, renting out purely electric passenger and commercial vehicles.
In Eppingen, a 30 million euro, 35-hectare free-field photovoltaic plant is under construction. Meanwhile, Florian Oeß is on his way to the groundbreaking ceremony for an Agri-Photovoltaic plant in Bad Rappenau.
The Kraichgau region has also implemented two heat networks, although the exact locations remain undisclosed. The cooperative brings together various actors for free-field photovoltaic plants, including municipalities, citizens, farmers, and nature conservation associations.
The BEG Kraichgau's efforts are not limited to the projects in Bad Rappenau and Eppingen. However, further details about other projects are not available at this time.
The cooperative's role extends beyond project development. It also serves as a community organiser, contributing locally to Germany's larger goals of energy transition and climate action. This is evident in events such as the Municipal Climate Protection Congress on June 5 in Waiblingen, organised by the Ministry of the Environment and KEA-BW, where climate protection can be achieved together.
