Poundland Announces Store Closures and Restructuring
Poundland, the popular bargain chain, has announced plans to close 12 more stores across the UK, including locations in Brigg, Canterbury, Coventry, Newcastle, Kings Heath, Peterborough, Peterlee, Rainham, Salford, Sheldon, Wells, and Whitechapel. This news comes as part of a larger restructuring effort following the sale of the company to US investment firm Gordon Brothers [1].
The closures are scheduled for August 24, 2025, and are part of a wider plan to close 68 stores, putting more than 1,000 jobs at risk across the UK and Ireland [2]. The specific details for the August 24 closures, as well as the support measures for affected employees, have not been publicly disclosed.
The company's retail director, Darren MacDonald, stated that the closures are necessary to get the company back on track [1]. Gordon Brothers has agreed to provide up to £80million in financing to Poundland as part of the deal, and the CEO of Poundland, Barry Williams, will continue to head the company under the new ownership.
In addition to the store closures, Poundland will also be making changes to its product offerings. The number of chilled food items sold in stores will be reduced, and Gordon Brothers plans to remove frozen food products from stores where they are currently sold. The company will also no longer sell products on its website.
Poundland's national distribution center in Bilston, West Midlands, will close in early 2026, and the frozen and digital distribution center in Darton, South Yorkshire, will close later this year. The company's store in Wells, located at 27-29 High Street, BA5 2AA, and the store in Canterbury, located at Unit 2A, Marshwood Close Retail Park, CT1 1DX, are among those that will be closing as part of the restructuring.
Poundland was previously owned by the Polish company Pepco Group, which put the company up for auction in March. The store in Sheldon, located at 2192 Coventry Road, B26 3JE, the store in Brigg, located at Cary Lane, DN20 8EY, the store in Peterlee, located at 32 Yoden Way, Castle Dene Shopping Centre, SR8 1AL, the store in Newcastle, located at Unit 15-18, Killingworth Centre, NE12 6YT, the store in Coventry, located at 63 Hertford Street, CV1 1LB, the store in Kings Heath, located at 74-76 High Street, B14 7JZ, the store in Peterborough, located at Unit 19, Orton Gate Shopping Centre, PE2 5TD, and the store in Whitechapel, located at Units 2-5, 75 Whitechapel Road, E1 1DU, are also among the stores that will be closing.
As the situation develops, it is important for affected employees to check directly with Poundland or their official communications for any updates regarding employee support measures related to these closures.
