Get ready to hit the road! The long-anticipated extension of the A72 motorway linking Leipzig and Chemnitz is just around the corner. This summer sees the much-needed upgrade of the road connecting Leipzig interchange to Zwenkau junction, according to the Federal Motorway Authority reps. After 20-odd years of waiting, this marks the final push!
Currently, traffic en route to Chemnitz is navigating the detour along two temporary lanes in reverse direction. But fret not, as things are falling into place as planned. The official intersection with the A38, equipped with dual carriageways and multiple lanes, is expected by 2026. Some finishing touches will be required post haste, such as applying a special noise-dampening asphalt.
This 162-kilometer connecting journey from the Bavarian Vogtland to Leipzig via Chemnitz has been under development in phases since 2003. The particularly tricky section lying between Rotha in Leipzig's district and the A38 south of Leipzig posed quite a challenge, as a substantial stretch passes through open-cast mining territories. The land had to undergo rigorous compaction to lay the groundwork for the motorway.
