Progression of Merzig-Mettlach Railway Line's Renovation Moves Forward

Saarland's Popular Saarradweg Enters Renovation Phase: Seven-Week Detour Announced

Starting Monday, September 18, 2023, the Saarradweg, one of Saarland's most frequented cycling routes, will enter the next phase of extensive renovation. The State Office for Road Construction (LfS) has reported that this phase involves the construction section "BA 5," stretching from the L 175 in Merzig to Nohner Straße just before Mettlach-Dreisbach.

Over the next seven weeks, weather permitting, cyclists and pedestrians can expect disruptions due to the construction. A full closure will occur during the construction period. However, an alternative signposted detour is available for those who wish to continue enjoying the scenic Saar landscape. The detour leads via Nohner Straße to the "In der Schank" car park and then proceeds onto a pedestrian and cycle path toward the L 175. Those coming from the opposite direction follow the detour in the reverse order.

The renovation of this section is part of a comprehensive project to revamp the Saarradweg from Merzig to the state border with Rhineland-Palatinate. This extensive project totals approximately 23 kilometers and is backed by substantial investments. The State Office for Road Construction (LfS) will contribute 2.9 million euros, while an additional 4 million euros will come from federal funds provided by the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV) within the framework of the "Expansion and Extension of the German Cycling Network" program.

The German Cycling Network, part of the European long-distance cycling network "EuroVelo," is of great significance in the cycling community. With twelve "D-Routes," the "Radweg Deutsche Einheit," and the "Iron Curtain Trail," it symbolizes quality, fame, and attractiveness for cyclists worldwide. This network spans an impressive 11,700 kilometers and is an integral part of the European long-distance cycling network.

To find information about detours during the construction, consider visiting local cycling websites or forums, checking government or local authority websites, using cycling apps, or contacting local tourism offices. Prior to your trip, it's essential to check for updates to ensure you have the most accurate and up-to-date information. Moreover, always follow local safety guidelines and rules when using detours. Stay flexible and be prepared for changes in plans due to unexpected road conditions. Consider using GPS devices to navigate through unfamiliar areas and detours.

  • Due to the renovation of the Saarradweg, cyclists and pedestrians may encounter disruptions in the public-transit system, particularly along the seven-week detour from Merzig to Mettlach-Dreisbach, which is part of the extensive transportation project.
  • The industry and finance sectors have significantly contributed to the revamp of the Saarradweg, with the State Office for Road Construction (LfS) investing 2.9 million euros and the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV) providing an additional 4 million euros through the "Expansion and Extension of the German Cycling Network" program.
