Tram Projects in Berlin: Here's the Lowdown

Streetcar development efforts continue to progress - Railway developments remain unfinished

Hey there! Let's chat about the progress of those long-awaited trams in good ol' Berlin. Now, it's not exactly lightning-fast, but it's moving, man!

Tino Schopf, transportation spokesperson for the SPD faction, got some juicy details out of Berlin's transport administration, so keep reading if you're intrigued!

First off, we've got a 1.7-kilometer track in the works – Hultschiner Damm to Mahlsdorf in the districts of Marzahn-Hellersdorf. The plan is for this baby to roll in 2028.

Next on the list, the Turmstraße-Jungfernheide line, stretching 3.8 kilometers through Moabit to Charlottenburg-Nord. It's currently in the design phase, with an estimated launch in 2029.

As for the Friedrichshain-Neukölln line from Warschauer Straße to Hermannplatz, don't hold your breath – 2031 is the projected date for it to start running. Same goes for the new city quarter Elisabeth-Aue in northern Pankow, which plans to connect via a new tram track. Operation is expected in 2030.

Sadly, we don't yet have a timeline for the new tram track from the Urban Tech Republic to Spandau Town Hall. Consultations with the district are still ongoing, so no firm statements about the time horizon can be made just yet.

Want to know more about specific projects? Let's dive into a couple of interesting tidbits!

  1. New Tram Line Connecting Pankow and Weißensee:
  2. Status: In the planning phase, with local gardeners voicing concerns about the project's potential impact on community gardens.
  3. Timeline: Scheduled to commence operations by 2031.
  4. Budget: Approximately 75 million euros.[2]
  5. Wuhlheide Bridge Demolition and Tram Service Resumption:
  6. Status: Demolition ongoing, with significant progress made. Tram services are set to resume shortly as a shuttle service between Schöneweide and Blockdammweg.
  7. Timeline: Full tram service resumption is estimated to happen by the weekend, pending clearance. The bridge area's full reopening is projected for June 27, 2025[5].

In reference to the Tram Projects in Berlin, it's worth noting that one of the upcoming initiatives involves vocational training programs for local residents, as part of the community policy. The training will focus on the tram industry, providing individuals with the skills necessary to work on these projects, thus creating job opportunities and strengthening the local economy.

Another point of interest is the potential use of financial aid for the transportation sector to ensure the smooth implementation of these tram projects, ultimately paving the way for more efficient and sustainable commuting in Berlin.
