Ranong Port's Southern Land Bridge Project Slashes Transit Times to Bimstec Countries
Ranong Port, Thailand's western gateway to the Bimstec countries, has seen a significant boost with the launch of the southern Land Bridge project. This multimodal transport initiative, inaugurated by the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT), aims to streamline freight transport and enhance regional economic networks.
The project integrates trucking, rail, and maritime shipping to reduce transit times and transport costs. Previously, freight transport from Ranong to Yangon took 14-21 days. Now, it takes just three days, thanks to the new land transport corridor linking Ranong to Chumphon on the Gulf of Thailand.
The project also creates a vital freight route connecting China, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, and South Asian countries via the west coast of southern Thailand. This corridor provides a competitive advantage for both Thai and international operators, promoting regional economic growth.
Ranong Port, with its capacity to handle both containerised and general cargo, has been elevated to a central maritime trade hub on Thailand's Andaman coast. The inaugural shipment to Yangon Port in Myanmar marked this significant development.
The multimodal transport project at Ranong Port, supported by key logistics players like Thai Transport Centre Co, SCG JWD Logistics Plc, Ever Flow River Group Plc, and SPT Smart Creation Co, has successfully reduced transit times and enhanced Thailand's connectivity to Bimstec countries. This project is set to boost regional trade and economic cooperation.
