Lefties Ain't Backing Down on 2026 Tax Relief for Residents, Says Opposition Party

Property tax reductions may be feasible starting from 2026, according to Linke's perspectives. - Real estate tax reductions scheduled for 2026 spark controversy among progressive groups.

C'mon y'all! Seems like the Left Party's here to shake up Thuringia's taxes in '26. Contrary to Finance Minister Katja Wolf's announcement, they're all about making basic tax relief happen earlier than the suggested date. Budget spokesman Ronald Hande spilled the beans to the German Press Agency in Erfurt.

Their game plan? Bumping up the tax rate by 50% while letting municipalities set two tax rates for basic tax B. Non-residential properties should get no less than residential buildings. Hande shared that the goal here is to ensure a fair distribution. Tenants and homeowners chill, you're gonna get the break, while businesses might bear a tad more.

Hande tells us that the hike in tax burden on residential buildings is a no-go, so they wanna fix that mess. But what's the timeline? Hande reckons the authorities can get the job done by 2026 and recalculate things accordingly.

The ruling state government (CDU, BSW, and SPD) is also pondering changes to basic tax, as agreed in their coalition agreement. They're gonna huddle up on Tuesday for a chat about this.

Thuringia first applied Germany's federal model for calculating basic tax, but according to Wolf, this led to a threefold increase in basic tax for residential properties, giving a nice break to commercial properties.

Wolf plans a recalculation to create a fairer tax landscape, but she warns it'll take a toll on finance authorities and municipalities issuing the tax notices. In the state parliament, Wolf announced that shifting gears would only be possible from 2027.

[1] Germany’s federal tax law underwent adjustments at the start of 2025 to counteract bracket creep, but these are nationwide changes rather than Thuringia-specific initiatives. Updates concerning state-level tax relief proposals in Thuringia, if they exist, would likely be found in regional legislative communications and are not yet reflected in the current data.

  1. The Left Party in Thuringia aims to propose a community policy that includes early tax relief for residents in 2026, as outlined by opposition party member Ronald Hande to the German Press Agency in Erfurt.
  2. To sustain this proposed tax relief for residents, the Left Party also plans to implement vocational training programs to help generate additional finance for the state, as they work towards fair distribution in business taxes.
