Reconstruction of Fuencarral Interchange, key access point to Madrid Nuevo Norte, kicks off in 2027

The Fuencarral Interchange, a crucial connection point for several Madrid neighbourhoods, is set for a significant renovation. The €2.6 million project, approved by the Madrid City Council in July 2024, aims to address capacity issues and accommodate the growth of Madrid Nuevo Norte.

The renovation works, scheduled to begin more than a year from now in the first quarter of 2027, will focus on resizing the interchange to improve traffic flow. The construction project, currently being tendered, will also reorganize urban roads with the M-40, M-607, and M-603, while minimizing the impact on key infrastructures like railways, the Canal de Isabel II arteries, high and medium voltage power lines, and other urban services.

The project's objectives extend beyond infrastructure improvements. It is designed to maintain the current traffic level of the affected roads, especially the M-40, and to preserve the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Valverde, a historic site in the area. Additionally, the project will continue the bike lane and pedestrian routes in the area, and strive to not alter the urban planning of the surrounding areas or, as much as possible, the land outside the area.

Borja Carabante, the delegate of the Area of Urban Planning, Environment, and Mobility, is overseeing the project. For detailed information, it would be necessary to consult official sources or local news outlets that have covered the project. This could include publications from the City of Madrid or regional transport authorities. Environmental impact assessments and cultural heritage preservation plans might be available from these sources to provide insights into how the project is managed with respect to infrastructure and historical sites like Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Valverde.

The Fuencarral Interchange is key to connecting Madrid Nuevo Norte with the M-40, M-607, M-603, Tres Olivos, Las Tablas, and Montecarmelo neighbourhoods. The construction project, once tendered, awarded, and drafted, will pave the way for these connections to be improved, ensuring smooth traffic flow and a more efficient urban infrastructure.

  1. The project, aiming to minimize the environmental impact on key infrastructures and historical sites, also includes the continuation of bike lanes and pedestrian routes, ensuring sustainable transportation options remain in place.
  2. In an effort to maintain financial stability and attract industrial growth in the area, the Fuencarral Interchange renovation project ensures accommodations for future growth, such as Madrid Nuevo Norte, while striving to preserve the existing urban planning and historical sites.
