Redesigning Funkytown in Oberschöneweide: Insights into the plans of eight architectural companies for a modern housing district
The long-abandoned Spree area in Oberschöneweide is set to undergo a remarkable transformation with the development of the Funkytown campus. This innovative project, designed by a diverse group of renowned architects, promises to offer a unique and versatile space that is already attracting creative companies.
At the heart of this campus is STATION A, designed by Graft Architects. Its dynamic building corner and large-format windows are designed to captivate, while STATION B, designed by Grüntuch Ernst Architects, boasts a perforated aluminum sheet facade with musical references to the broadcasting house.
The designs for the eight STATIONS were chosen through a legal lottery to ensure diversity and creativity on campus. KSP Engel Berlin, responsible for the overall urban planning and STATION D, have crafted a more sculptural, ceramic-glossy facade design. STATION C, planned by Julian Breinersdorfer Architects, translates forms of DDR architecture into a modern variant with striking concrete elements.
STATION E, designed by LXSY Architecture, combines recycled brick with a wavy metal shell, while STATION F, designed by LAVA, is a wooden hybrid building with a smaragd-green, parametrically developed facade and greened zones. STATION G, designed by Tchoban Voss Architects, features a Corten steel facade that is plastically articulated and sustainably designed.
The final STATION, STATION H, designed by Thomas Hillig Architects, is intended to blend in with a neighboring allotment garden via its green wooden cladding and trellises.
The Funkytown campus will not only offer office spaces, studios, production areas, education, and research spaces but also a diverse architectural landscape that reacts to the location and different uses with a variety of materials, shapes, and concepts.
The demand for space is high due to the versatile concept and location on the Spree. Half of the space in the campus has already been leased, with long-term tenants including Nena Hospitality and The Base, each renting a complete STATION.
As the transformation of the Funkytown campus continues, it promises to become a vibrant and dynamic hub for creativity and innovation in Oberschöneweide.
