Regensburg's Green Energy Shift: ERO Project to Power Giants, Cut CO2
Regensburg's energy landscape is set to change with the launch of the Regensburg East Energy Area (ERO) project. The photovoltaic plant, with a capacity of 11 megawatt-peak (MWp), is expected to supply CO2-free electricity to major companies and contribute significantly to the city's Green Deal. The project is a collaborative effort involving the BERR energy cooperative and local citizens and employees.
The ERO project, launched today, is poised to cover approximately one fifth of the power needs of AUMOVIO, Schaeffler, and Siemens. It is anticipated to commence operations in summer 2026, marking a significant step in Regensburg's sustainability goals and energy transition. Notably, the project is estimated to result in a local CO2 reduction of approximately 4,000 tons per year.
Mayor Gertrud Maltz-Schwarzfischer has welcomed the ERO project, viewing it as a substantial contributor to the city's Green Deal. The project allows for direct participation of citizens and employees via the BERR cooperative, fostering a sense of community involvement in the city's energy future.
The ERO project, with its 11 MWp capacity, is set to make a substantial impact on Regensburg's energy scene. By supplying CO2-free electricity to major companies and reducing local emissions, it stands as a testament to the city's commitment to sustainability and renewable energy.
