Reinvent Your Life Direction: Harnessing the Potential of a Career Transition

A Gutsy Pivot from Corporate Life: The Story of Stefanie Ricchio

"Can't do it. Unrealistic. You've never done this before."

These dismissive words were my response when I dared to voice my desire to leave the corporate world behind and venture out on my own. Little did I know that this setback would ignite a dive into entrepreneurship, eventually leading to the formation of SRBC Inc.

Struck with the cold reality that those close to me were often the harshest critics, I learned an essential lesson—people see the world through their own lens, not yours. Let it go, move on.

I was pinning for a career change, trapped in a traditional corporate accounting job, yearning for inspiration and fulfillment. My previous dreams of rising to a senior-level position, earning a substantial income and calling it a day began to fade. So, I made the decision to pivot.

Tech seemed the obvious choice, and I envisioned creating a balance between earning well, working from home, and maintaining a connection with my now-teenage children. My aspirations may have felt modest, and the initial naysayer’s critique left a lasting impact, but I pressed on.

The Birth of a Vision

I couldn't quite articulate my plan or see the entire picture ahead, but I knew for sure that my passion for a typical corporate accounting job had dwindled. After nearly 20 years in the field, the driving force for progression was gone.

Initially, I sought accounting clients but soon realized that my interest lay elsewhere. Eventually, the pieces started to fall into place, as the first opportunity arose through subcontracting work. From there, I learned the ins and outs of building financial business systems, leading to clients worldwide through word-of-mouth, agency support, and my website.

The first engagement was far from perfect, but it provided valuable lessons. I'll always be grateful for that initial kick-start.

Breaking Ground

It took months to secure the first engagement—months of sending LinkedIn messages and cold emails, trying my best to figure out the formula. Initially, my pitches lacked clarity and direction, but the responses I got served as inspiration to persevere, even when nothing appeared to materialize. Key takeaway: Don't be afraid to make a start, and learn through trial and error.

To get started, one only needs a chance. I was hesitant to invest in marketing as I wasn't yet certain of my unique selling proposition. Although I recognized my niche of combining accounting with technology, I needed to refine my offer and perfect my client pitch to close deals.

Evolving Success

Seven years and numerous financial system builds, data migration challenges, and financial literacy offerings later, I found myself yearning for something bolder. The ambitious CPA decided to delve into app development—the Empowering Value App now in the App Store.

Over the years, I've honed my ability to sell my value and refined my pitches. This transformation propelled my business from $0 to seven figures from my kitchen table—all while making the leap from a traditional finance and business career to a 25+ year finance and technology professional.

I went from having no network to building strong relationships with global tech giants and individual users. My business grew through word of mouth and referrals, ultimately leading to negotiations with both clients and vendors to ensure optimal returns on my investments.

Careers don't need to be static, and your first idea doesn't have to be 'the' idea. Allow change, and embrace evolving aspirations.
