California's Daggett Solar+Storage Facility: A Milestone in Clean Energy Transition
In a significant stride towards a cleaner and more sustainable future, California's Daggett Solar+Storage Facility, developed by Clearway Energy Group, commenced operations in 2023. This 482MW solar plant, coupled with a 280MW battery system, is one of the largest solar-plus-storage facilities in the state.
The facility, located next to the defunct Coolwater gas-fired power station in California, is expected to provide clean, reliable, and low-cost power to homes and businesses for years to come. It is being built in three phases and is poised to drastically cut pollution, contributing to the combat against climate change.
The project brings a billion-dollar investment to an energy transition community and is anticipated to generate up to $18.5 million in local tax income and $5 million in expenditure during its operation. Moreover, the collaboration with IBEW Local 477 resulted in the creation of over 500 union jobs during its development.
Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, lauded the project, calling it "innovation and big thinking" that will help achieve a 100% clean electric grid. The facility's construction created good-paying jobs, further bolstering the local economy.
Once completed, the last battery storage section will increase the facility's total capacity to 394MW. This section has been contracted independently with an investment-grade rated utility offtaker, ensuring its long-term viability.
Clearway Energy Group CEO Craig Cornelius expressed gratitude to consumers, partners, San Bernardino County, and the Daggett and Newberry Springs communities for their assistance in making the project a reality. The facility has secured contracts with Clean Power Alliance, Constellation, East Bay Community Energy (EBCE), soon to be renamed as Ava Community Energy, MCE, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), and Southern California Public Power Authority (SCPPA).
California's Daggett Solar+Storage Facility is not alone in its mission to integrate solar power with significant battery storage. Other large-scale projects, such as the Slate Project in Kings County, the Peregrine Energy Storage Project in San Diego, and the Eland Solar Project, are also making strides in improving grid stability and supporting the state's clean energy transition.
