Research halts in Saarlouis: investigation to delve into the affairs of the Saar
The MS Wissenschaft, a converted cargo ship operated by Science in Dialogue (WiD) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Research, will be docking in Saarlouis from July 26 to 30, 2025. This unique exhibition, which tours German and Austrian cities, presents current scientific innovations, including a special exhibit from the INM Leibniz Institute for New Materials on sustainable lithium extraction from German waters ([1], [2], [3]).
Mayor Quirin has praised the exhibition concept for inspiring visitors and raising awareness about future themes and the challenges of our time. The MS Wissenschaft aims to make these future topics tangible for all visitors, offering interactive elements for children and deeper research stations for adults ([1]).
The INM exhibit highlights innovative methods for lithium recovery, an element essential for batteries and energy storage. This demonstrates Germany’s efforts towards sustainable resource extraction and advancing future energy solutions. Larger quantities of lithium are found in the North German Basin, with smaller deposits also found in the mine water of the Saar ([4]).
Arne Leuzinger from the MS Wissenschaft team provided a tour, explaining the purpose of the exhibition. The MS Wissenschaft has been bringing new exhibitions on current research and technology topics directly to the people every year for over 20 years ([5]).
The exhibition on the MS Wissenschaft showcases concepts being developed for the cities of tomorrow, including geothermal energy, fusion research, and smart cities. It also demonstrates how future energy can be used for sustainable mobility ([6]).
During the ship’s visit to Saarlouis, various family-friendly events will coincide, making it an educational experience for all ages during this period ([4]). For more detailed program schedules or inquiries, experts from the INM will be available at prior stops such as Saarbrücken to discuss research developments in energy materials ([1]).
The official website ms-wissenschaft.de offers updates on the timetable and activities. The MS Wissenschaft, originally a cargo ship, is sent on tour by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space, benefiting politics and administration with its excellent exhibition concept ([7]).
Mayor Carsten Quirin visited the exhibition on the MS Wissenschaft and expressed his appreciation for the educational and inspiring exhibits. The MS Wissenschaft exhibition raises awareness of future themes and how to address the challenges of our time, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in the future of energy and technology.
