Gas Drilling Fiasco: New Gas Extraction Threatens Germany's Green Agenda

Researchers argue against the use of a novel method for natural gas extraction. - Researchers argue against expanding natural gas extraction methods, deeming it an unfavorable approach.

Get ready for a rollercoaster ride! The debatable natural gas extraction off the North Sea island of Borkum could, according to a scientist's assessment, open the gates for more gas drilling in the near future. This potentially dangerous situation is known as "fossil lock-in" – once the machinery and know-how for gas extraction is in place, it could be financially beneficial to probe further gas reserves. "Each subsequent drilling is cheaper than the one before," says Pao-Yu Oei, a professor specializing in energy transition at the Europa-University in Flensburg. This cherry on top doesn't bode well for Germany's pursuit of becoming climate-neutral by 2045.

The Dutch energy powerhouse One-Dyas has its sights set on more gas fields beyond Borkum in the North Sea.

A Fatal Mistake, According to the Expert

Professor Oei deems the exploration of new gas reserves the wrong move. "In the long run, we're certain that gas demand in Germany will decrease," he declared in a press interview. By 2030, calculations by grid operators and consulting firms project gas consumption, which was around 800 terawatt hours in 2024, to drop to approximately 500 to 600 terawatt hours.

The German government is reportedly considering an agreement with the Netherlands to make further drilling possible. However, there are legal proceedings still in progress regarding natural gas extraction, sparking criticism of the proposed agreement.

Criticism from Fridays for Future

Carla Reemtsma, spokesperson for Fridays for Future Germany, has called out the new coalition government for driving a "gas expansion policy." Beyond the gas extraction off Borkum, she mentioned plans to construct new gas power plants and import more fracking gas as further concerns. "If Germany wants to be true to its responsibilities and meet climate goals, we need a clear plan for exiting gas energy instead of continually entering more dirty, fossil gas," said Reemtsma.

  1. The gas drilling fiasco in Borkum, Germany, has raised environmental concerns due to potential ecological impacts on marine life and the dangers of oil and gas leaks or spills.
  2. The exploration and exploitation of new gas reserves, such as those in the North Sea, could hinder Germany's energy transition away from fossil fuels and its commitment to becoming climate-neutral by 2045.
  3. The Netherlands' energy company One-Dyas plans to expand gas drilling beyond the island of Borkum, which has sparked criticism from environmentalists and climate advocates like Fridays for Future Germany.
  4. Germany's consideration of an agreement with the Netherlands for further gas drilling has been met with opposition due to ongoing legal proceedings and concerns about driving a "gas expansion policy."
  5. In the midst of growing climate-change concerns and the push towards renewable energy, the environmental science, policy-and-legislation, and politics communities are closely watching Germany's energy policy decisions and their impact on the global transition towards a greener, more sustainable future.
