Restoring Financial Development: Insights by Stiglitz and Cuerpo's Perspective

At the recent UN Conference on Funding Development, Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz shared his concerns about the current state of development in Ethiopia. According to Stiglitz, progress in Ethiopia, which has been unprecedented in terms of poverty reduction, increased school enrollment, and provision of clean water, may be slowing down.

In Ethiopia, several challenges are currently impeding the progress made in these areas. Economic instability and conflict have led to extreme poverty worsening, causing significant economic damage and displacement. The allocation of substantial funds to grand projects like palace constructions has raised concerns about prioritizing state expenditures over essential needs like poverty alleviation.

Schools in Ethiopia often lack adequate supplies and facilities, which can hinder educational progress and increase disparities in access to quality education. The lack of proper infrastructure and resources in schools can negatively impact enrollment rates and educational outcomes.

Many communities in Ethiopia lack access to clean water and sanitation, a critical issue that affects health and well-being. Similar to educational challenges, the allocation of resources towards infrastructure projects over basic needs like water and sanitation can exacerbate these issues.

Joseph Stiglitz's opinion suggests a need for increased attention and funding for development efforts in Ethiopia to address these pressing social and economic issues. It is worth noting that Stiglitz's Spanish counterpart, Minister Carlos Cuerpo, was not mentioned as having any opinion about the state of development in Ethiopia during the conference.

Cuerpo, the Minister of Economy, Trade, and Business of Spain, might have a role to play in shaping the international community's response to these challenges. As the UN Conference on Funding Development continues, it is hoped that more opinions and suggestions will be shared to help Ethiopia overcome these obstacles and continue its path towards sustainable development.
