Hyundai i30 N Takes On Hot Hatch Competition in Australia

Revealed: Pricing and features of the 2018 Hyundai i30N model

The Hyundai i30 N is set to make its debut in Australia in mid-April, with order books now open. Priced at AUD $39,990, the i30 N is poised to challenge the likes of the Golf GTI Original and Peugeot 308 GTi 270 in the hot hatch segment.

Hyundai's N-Division boss, Albert Biermann, emphasizes the emotional appeal of the i30N, stating that it is designed to induce a high heart rate (BPM) while driving. The i30 N's design, sound, and driving dynamics are intended to create a compelling case against its competitors.

The i30 N boasts a Theta II T-GDi engine, delivering 202kW of power and 378Nm of torque. Its performance is measured not just by RPM, but also by heart beats per minute (BPM). The i30 N has been locally track tested, and its agile handling and responsive steering have proven it to be well-suited for track driving.

In track tests, the i30 N accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 6.4 seconds for the base model and 6.1 seconds for the performance model. It is powered by a Theta II T-GDi engine with a maximum output of 250/275 HP, making it a strong competitor in the hot hatch segment.

The less powerful Golf GTI Original, priced at AUD $37,490, typically accelerates from 0-100 km/h in about 6.5 seconds, depending on the model year. While the GTI is a classic hot hatch with good handling, it is generally considered a step below the i30 N in terms of raw performance and track capability.

The Peugeot 308 GTi 270, priced at AUD $45,990, accelerates from 0-100 km/h in about 6 seconds. It boasts a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine producing 270 HP, offering strong performance for its size. The 308 GTi 270 is known for its agile and responsive handling, making it a strong contender in track tests. Its smaller size and lower weight compared to the i30 N can provide an advantage in tight corners.

The i30 N is designed to provide a satisfying driving experience, especially on winding roads. An option pack is available for the i30 N to make it more comfortable as a daily driver, adding an additional $2000 to the price.

Hyundai Australia CEO JW Lee is confident in the i30 N, stating that it offers a unique combination of performance and affordability. MOTOR's first drive of the i30 N on Australian roads will be forthcoming, providing a more in-depth look at this exciting new hot hatch.
