Romania continues to grant Salrom the authorization for graphite extraction in Gorj County

Romania's government has taken a significant step forward in the country's economic development by renewing the exploitation license for the graphite deposit at Baia de Fier in Gorj County. This decision allows state-owned company Salrom to resume mining operations [1].

The graphite deposit at Baia de Fier is the only such deposit in Romania, making it a valuable national resource. The renewal of the exploitation license ensures that this critical mineral remains the property of Romania, providing an opportunity to generate economic value domestically.

The minister of economy, Radu Mirutăă, stated that securing the license was important to keep the valuable mineral in Romania and produce value for the economy. He described the move as a source of "pride for Romanians" [1].

The renewal of the exploitation license comes amidst rising global demand for graphite, a mineral critical for conductors, mobile phone components, and the nuclear industry. The reopening of the mine is expected to create jobs and stimulate local economic development.

The government has consistently prioritized securing the exploitation license for the graphite deposit since the start of the current mandate. The minister's decision to renew the exploitation license is part of broader efforts to safeguard strategic resources and ensure they are exploited in the national interest.

The immediate priority after the renewal is to secure the mining perimeter and restart operations. The reopening of the mine is a strategic move to capitalize on Romania’s only graphite deposit with aims for sustained economic and technological benefits.
