Secured local supply confirmed in Kaltental

In the heart of Stuttgart, a city known for its vibrant culture and rich history, a new gem has emerged – Kußle's Fine Foods. This small-scale grocery store, nestled in the picturesque district of Kaltental, has become more than just a place to buy daily supplies. It's a community gathering spot, a testament to the city's commitment to supporting neighborhood stores, and a shining example of the success of Stuttgart's 'Nahversorgung konkret' funding program.

Launched in 2016, the 'Nahversorgung konkret' program is a collaborative effort between Stuttgart's urban planning office and economic development department. The program aims to ensure nearby basic supplies in residential areas, particularly in 'deficit areas' – locations that are underserved, structurally underserved, or at risk of losing their supply. Iris Gebauer from the city's economic development department emphasised the program's importance, stating that it often provides crucial support for operating grocery stores in residential areas.

The operator of Kußle's Fine Foods, Marcus Kußle, was supported by the 'Nahversorgung konkret' funding program. The store opened its doors in the fall of 2024, following comprehensive renovations, and has since become a central hub for daily supplies and a social gathering spot for Kaltental's residents.

Hermann-Lambert Oediger, head of the urban development department, highlighted the program's role in securing the daily supply offering in Kaltental. In fact, the city council provided a grant of 48,000 euros from the funding program to support the renovation and opening of Kußle's Fine Foods.

The Kuss couple, the proud owners of Kußle's Fine Foods, describe their store as 'A little gem with heart for Kaltental and the surrounding area - where quality, passion, and regional connection come together in every product.' Their store not only meets the daily supply needs of the neighborhood but also continues to serve as an important community gathering spot.

Kaltental was briefly counted among these deficit areas due to the impending closure of a grocery store at Hirsauer Straße 22. However, the city of Stuttgart's funding program aims to prevent the loss of supply in these areas by supporting small-scale grocery stores like Kußle's Fine Foods.

The program focuses on workfare- or SGB-funded grocery stores and small, owner-operated offerings that compete with traditional, large-scale grocery stores in non-profitable locations. One year after the grand opening, Kußle's Fine Foods has been well-received by Kaltental's residents, demonstrating the program's success in supporting neighborhood stores.

Another example of the program's impact can be seen in the 'Fresh Market Khalil', a grocery store that has been a central hub for daily supplies and a social gathering spot in the neighborhood for over 30 years. The city's funding program has been instrumental in ensuring the continuity of such stores in Stuttgart.

In conclusion, the 'Nahversorgung konkret' funding program plays a crucial role in Stuttgart, ensuring the availability of daily supplies in residential areas and supporting small-scale grocery stores that are vital to local communities. The program's success is evident in the thriving stores like Kußle's Fine Foods and Fresh Market Khalil, which not only provide essential supplies but also serve as community gathering spots.
