SIU Uncovers R2 Billion Tembisa Hospital Corruption Scandal
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has uncovered a massive corruption scandal at Tembisa Hospital, with over R122 million in alleged bribes traced to officials. The SIU is now pursuing civil proceedings to recover lost funds and assets, with the investigation set to conclude by November 2027.
The SIU has identified three major syndicates involved in the scandal: Syndicate X, the Mazibuko Syndicate, and the Maumela Syndicate. These groups are linked to a staggering R879.9 million in transactions and R192.6 million in assets. The Maumela Syndicate, in particular, is under investigation for transactions linked to 1,728 procurement bundles, totaling R816,560,710.
The SIU has prepared 116 disciplinary matters against 13 officials and referred four criminal matters to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). The corruption suspects involved in the Tembisa Hospital scandal include key officials from the Gauteng Department of Health and hospital staff connected to the three main syndicates. These groups engaged in fraud, money laundering, and procurement irregularities, looting over R2 billion from the hospital.
Hangwani Morgan Maumela, nephew of President Cyril Ramaphosa, is a key figure in the scandal, linked to R816.5 million in irregular transactions. The SIU has identified properties worth approximately R293,434,000 and luxury vehicles worth R223,598,516 linked to Maumela. The investigation aims to recover these assets and bring the culprits to justice.
