Red Alert on Red Caviar: What's With the Skyrocketing Prices in 2025?

Summer is here, and so is the eye-popping price hike for fresh red caviar. Starting June 1, nouveau riches might have to break the bank to get their hands on a kilogram of this luxury delicacy, with prices soaring up to 9,5 thousand rubles! But that's just the beginning. Let's dive deeper into this pricey affair.

The red caviar price surge came after the salmon season commenced on June 1 in Kamchatka. The new prices are a cool 2 thousand rubles more expensive than last year, and experts predict a whopping 50% hike by December! That's enough to make your jaw drop.

At current prices, indulging in a kilogram of red caviar might cost you around 15 thousand rubles in the central Russian regions by the end of the year. Sounds familiar? That's because it's reminiscent of the peak prices at the end of 2024.

Alexander Savelyev, head of the information agency for fisheries, sheds some light on the situation. He also mentions a steep rise in prices for other Pacific salmon species. Chum salmon, for instance, is going for 1,8 thousand rubles per kg, up 300 rubles from last year, while pink salmon costs 800 rubles, and chum lurks at 600 rubles per kg.

But wait! Here's some good news for aspiring red caviar hoarders: thanks to Vladimir Putin signing a law extension in April, you can now carry a maximum of 10 kg of caviar per flight – not just from Kamchatka, but also from other Far East regions like Chukotka and Khabarovsk Krai. Consider it one less thing to worry about, caviar enthusiasts!

It seems the rosy catch forecasts are driving both the Russian Far East and the Pacific salmon market cycle. Fingers are crossed for a strong catch of 311.7 thousand tons in 2025, with Kamchatka expected to lead the pack with 199.25 thousand tons.

Remember when the Sakhalin Oblast's pollock fishery kicked off the season in May, followed by Kamchatka joining in on June 1? Well, if Mother Nature cooperates, the season should wrap up by November 30 in the Southern Kurils.

Stay tuned as we keep our eyes peeled for more updates on this tantalizing rollercoaster ride of red caviar prices!

Luxury lifestyle items such as food-and-drink products, like red caviar, are becoming increasingly expensive within the industry, especially in finance, with prices skyrocketing up to 9,5 thousand rubles for a kilogram in 2025. The surge in prices is also affecting other Pacific salmon species, such as chum, pink, and chum salmon, which have seen price hikes of up to 300 rubles per kilogram.
