SMA Solar is set to initiate formal discussions with its works council next week regarding additional job cuts. The company, headquartered in Niestetal near Kassel, is restructuring due to a weak market and intense price pressure in the residential and commercial sectors.
SMA, which employs 3,800 people globally with 2,800 at its headquarters, aims to save another 100 million euros through these cuts. Around 300 jobs, mostly at the Niestetal site, will be affected starting January 2026. The company also plans to optimize research and development spending and withdraw from unprofitable markets.
Last year, SMA's net income plummeted to minus 118 million euros due to a lack of orders and fierce competition. By the end of 2026, SMA plans to cut around 350 more jobs worldwide, though the specific schedule for further cuts in the Kassel region is yet to be detailed.
SMA Solar's job cuts, set to begin in January 2026, are part of a larger restructuring effort to combat a weak market and intense price pressure. The company aims to save 100 million euros, with most cuts affecting its Niestetal headquarters. SMA also plans to optimize R&D spending and exit unprofitable markets, with total job cuts worldwide reaching around 350 by the end of 2026.
