Small Business Administration Introduces 'Made in America' Manufacturing Plan for Strengthening American Industry
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has announced the launch of the Made in America Manufacturing Initiative, a comprehensive plan aimed at revitalizing American manufacturing and supporting small businesses in the sector.
The initiative, set to be unveiled at an aerospace and defense manufacturing facility in Indianapolis, will be accompanied by state and federal leaders and small business owners in the manufacturing industry. According to SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler, the initiative aims to create high-paying jobs and revitalize communities across the country.
A key component of the initiative is the Made in America Roadshow, where representatives from the Office of Manufacturing and Trade will embark on a multistate tour over the next two months. The roadshow aims to gather industry feedback and identify further opportunities for support. However, specific states that will be visited have yet to be disclosed.
The SBA will also partner with agencies, trade schools, and private sector stakeholders to promote a pipeline of skilled manufacturing workers, recognising workforce development as a crucial aspect of the initiative.
To cut regulations that disproportionately impact small manufacturers, the Office of Advocacy within the SBA plans to eliminate $100 billion in regulatory burdens. A new hotline will allow small business owners to submit feedback on excessive regulations for review.
The initiative also seeks to expand access to capital, with plans to reduce barriers to the SBA's 504 loan program and expand the 7(a) Working Capital Pilot program. These measures aim to help small businesses finance inventory purchases and export-related expenses.
The Made in America Manufacturing Initiative aligns with the administration's broader agenda to restore American economic dominance and bolster national security. It aims to bolster the nation's industrial base and ensure that essential goods are produced domestically, supporting approximately 99% of American manufacturers, which are small businesses.
The initiative also supports broader manufacturing policies, including tariffs for fair trade, tax cuts on domestic production, and 100% expensing retroactive to Jan. 20, 2025. The SBA cited the addition of 10,000 manufacturing jobs in the President's first full month in office, reversing previous job losses in the industry.
A newly established Office of Manufacturing and Trade will provide dedicated resources, training, and support to small manufacturers in collaboration with SBA field offices nationwide. The SBA, however, did not specify the exact regulations to be cut or the methods for expanding access to capital.
The Made in America Manufacturing Initiative marks a significant step in supporting American small manufacturers, a key component of economic growth, job creation, and national security.
