Social Security Payments in May 2025: Early Checks and Delays
Retirees and other beneficiaries have seen an unusual payment schedule in May 2025. Some received their checks earlier than usual, while others face a delay. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has confirmed no payments will be issued until May 12.
Retirees who began collecting benefits before May 1997 received their checks on May 2, earlier than usual. This was due to May 1 falling on a Sunday. Meanwhile, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) recipients, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients, and other beneficiaries must wait until May 14 for their next disbursement. SSI recipients will receive an additional payment on May 30 due to June 1 falling on a Sunday.
The U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) oversees federal payments, including social security, ensuring they continue even during government shutdowns. May 2025 marks one of the latest payment schedules this year, with a total of six SSA disbursements in May. The SSA has confirmed no payments will be issued through May 12, 2025.
Beneficiaries should note the adjusted payment schedule for May 2025. Some received their checks earlier than usual, while others face a delay until May 14. SSI recipients will receive two checks in May. The OMB ensures the continuity of social security payments, even during shutdowns.
