Solar Canopy project initiated by Ameresco, in partnership with BXP, now becomes operational in Virginia.

Ameresco, Inc., a leading energy solutions provider headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts, has announced the successful completion of a 1.3 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) canopy project in Reston, Virginia. The project, developed in partnership with BXP, Inc., was completed at the end of 2024.

The solar PV system, mounted atop a parking garage, marks a significant milestone in Ameresco's ongoing efforts to deliver innovative energy solutions. This project offers numerous benefits, including cost savings, energy security, and reduced dependence on the electric grid.

The solar canopy is expected to generate approximately 1.5 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy annually, offsetting significant energy costs by producing around 325,000 kWh of electricity annually. This directly reduces the electricity bills for the facility utilizing the power, contributing to economic benefits in the form of lower operational expenses.

In terms of energy security, the on-site generation enhances resiliency for Reston Town Center. By producing its own renewable electricity, the project protects against grid disruptions and fluctuations, helping to stabilize energy availability for the area served by the canopy.

Moreover, the solar PV canopy reduces the need to draw electricity from the traditional electric grid by supplying clean, renewable power. This decreases reliance on centralized power sources and reduces vulnerability to grid outages or price volatility.

This innovative use of space also increases the covered parking capacity and transforms the garage into a megawatt-scale renewable energy plant. Ameresco and BXP remain dedicated to delivering cost-effective and reliable energy solutions to the Reston Town Center community.

Ameresco, Inc. operates in North America and Europe with over 1,500 employees.
