Turning Up the Wattage: Solar Power's Bright Future in Estonia by 2025

Solar energy could potentially supply half of Estonia's electricity demand within the next three years.

Say goodbye to dark days, Estonia! The sun's governing body has issued a solar energy power surge alert for the region, and it's about to shake up Estonia's electricity game.

As per the most recent data from Estonia's power system boss Elering, solar power stations accounted for a whopping 11.2% of Estonia's total power consumption in 2023, and you won't believe where those numbers are headed. With a plethora of renewable energy projects underway, Estonian energy powerhouses predict that solar energy could be pumping out half of the country's electricity needs in just three years!

Renewable electricity covered 35% of Estonia's consumption in the nine-month summary, setting a promising precedent for the future of green energy in the nation. By September's end, Estonia gobbled up 5,755 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity, with 646 GWh of that coming straight from sun-loving solar energy generators. Compare that to last year's 559 GWh, which translated to 6.8% of the year's total consumption, and the 329 GWh produced the year before last, a mere 3.9% of 2021's total—and you've got been witnesses to some scorching solar growth!

"We've hit a solar energy milestone faster than expected," confirms Ott Antsmaa, a powerhouse on KC Energy's board of directors. "We conventionally see 94% of the annual solar energy production accomplished within the cooler nine months, with the remaining six percent added during the chilly final three months of the year."

In 2023, Estonia saw its solar energy share double compared to the previous year, with KC Energy's production volume representing a massive 10% of Estonia's total solar output in the first nine months.

Solar Park Pass

Antsmaa drops another bomb, revealing that a whopping 2,700 megawatts (MW) of solar power park connection capacity is in the queue to be hooked up to the power grid, with contracts slated for completion ranging from 2023 to 2026. That's the equivalent of an additional 3,500 GWh of solar energy production, which, combined with the current volume, could potentially cover half of Estonia's annual electricity consumption.

However, keep in mind that not every project will necessarily see the light of day due to the dicey financing environment. Approximately 250 MW of large-scale solar parks are currently under construction, with sun-soaked operations expected to kick off within the next year. These projects could propel Estonia's solar energy production to a whopping 1,000 GWh by 2025!

KC Energy, owned by Kaamos Group and Combiwood Invest, is doubling down on its green game by aiming to boost its domestic green electricity sales and pump up the renewable energy production volume of its subsidiaries. The company's breadwinner operations revolve around creating and managing the infrastructure needed for solar energy production and selling the green juice it generates. As of now, the company's solar energy production capacities have surged to 70 MW, with plans for further expansion on the horizon.

Last but not least, remember that while we've got a hunch about Estonia's solar energy future, the exact figures for 2025 are still a mystery. However, Estonia's commitment to a carbon-free future, combined with global renewable energy trends and the European Union's backing, means solar's role in the region's energy landscape is bound to grow. So, buckle up—the solar revolution is coming to an Estonia near you!
