Spain holds a European record with 715 electricity and gas companies
In Spain, the energy sector is experiencing a surge of investment opportunities, with a focus on commercialization of both electricity (light) and gas. This boom primarily arises from renewable energy development, energy storage, and green hydrogen initiatives.
Key opportunities include renewable energy projects linked to solar photovoltaic (PV), wind power, and green hydrogen. The government is actively investing in these projects, backed by substantial EU and national funding such as Spain’s Recovery and Resilience Facility grants and NextGenerationEU programs.
Solar PV paired with large-scale battery storage, including agrivoltaic systems (solar + agriculture) and floating solar PV on irrigation ponds, are being prioritized. The expansion and modernization of power grids to integrate renewable generation and improve resilience are also receiving attention, with European Investment Bank (EIB) loans supporting these efforts.
Energy storage, a critical commercial sector for adding value to intermittent solar electricity and enhancing consumption flexibility, is another key focus. It is a mandated component in recently funded renewable projects.
Green hydrogen and electrification technologies are also on the agenda, with Spain prioritized for investments in green hydrogen infrastructure and renewable heat pumps, aligned with EU decarbonization and energy autonomy goals.
Regional focuses include Catalonia, Valencian Community, Madrid, and Andalusia, which host many innovative renewable and energy storage projects, benefiting from local expertise and infrastructure.
The energy transition is supported by strategic financing instruments and plans such as the Recovery Plan, NextGenEU funds, and the EU-backed Regional Resilience Fund, ensuring a stable investment climate with policy and financial backing.
Investors can explore opportunities in commercial deployment and scaling of solar, wind, and storage projects, manufacturing and supply chains for renewable energy equipment, grid modernization and digitalized energy management solutions, and green gas and hydrogen production and commercialization infrastructure.
Spain’s growing renewable energy market, robust financial support, and regulatory frameworks position it as a compelling destination for energy commercialization investments involving both electricity and gas sectors.
