In the heart of Thuringia, the historic city of Eisenach is home to the Opel plant, a significant player in the region's automotive industry. Established 35 years ago, the plant has been a cornerstone of the region's industrial landscape, producing a variety of vehicles, including the recently launched Grandland SUV.

The Grandland, available since late January 2023, is being produced in various drive variants, including hybrid and electric vehicles, reflecting the industry's shift towards electromobility. Opel invested around 130 million euros in the Eisenach plant to ensure smooth production of the Grandland and other models.

However, the transition to electromobility is not without challenges. The Thuringian automotive and supply industry, one of the most important sectors in the state, is currently in a severe crisis, leading to insolvencies and plant closures. The structural change towards electromobility is a significant factor in this crisis, as the industry adapts to new technologies and production processes.

The crisis is not limited to the Opel plant in Eisenach. The number of employees in the Thuringian automotive supply industry has decreased by approximately one-fifth due to this structural change. Despite this, the number of full-time positions at the Opel plant in Eisenach has risen slightly to 1,150 compared to the previous year.

Thuringia is making strides in supporting electromobility through its charging infrastructure. It currently boasts 161 MW of public charging power and is close to meeting its 2030 targets, needing only an additional 26 MW to reach its goal of 187 MW. The region is also involved in innovative projects, such as the opening of the first SOEC pilot production plant for electrolysis stacks, which could influence the broader industrial landscape.

The annual turnover of the automotive and supply industry in Thuringia is around four billion euros. The Thuringian government attributes the crisis in the industry to the structural change towards electromobility, highlighting the need for continued support and investment in the sector during this transition period.

As the Opel plant in Eisenach prepares for a vacation break from July 28 to August 11 in 2023, the future of the Thuringian automotive industry remains uncertain. The industry's resilience and adaptability in the face of these challenges will be crucial in shaping its future.

  1. Toaddress the crisis in Thuringia's automotive industry, there is a need for governamental support and investment in vocational training programs, focusing on electromobility, as this sector is shifting towards new technologies and production processes.
  2. The Thuringian finance department, in collaboration with the community, could explore partnerships with the automotive industry, offering grants or subsidies for vocational training programs, thus fostering a skilled workforce ready to excel in the evolving industry.
  3. The expansion of transportation infrastructure, such as updates to public charging stations, will not only support the growth of electromobility in Thuringia but also create new employment opportunities in industries like construction and transportation, contributing to the region's overall economic development.
