Sugar cane experts team up with FULafia to intensify sugar production output
The Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) has announced a partnership with the Sugar Technologists Society of Nigeria (STSN) to promote research and boost sugarcane production in Nigeria.
The partnership was announced by Prof. Shehu Abdul-Rahman, Vice Chancellor of FULafia, at the STSN's second International Conference held at the university. Prof. Abdul-Rahman assured that the institution was ready to strengthen synergy with all stakeholders to succeed in the sustainability of sugar production in the country.
The keynote speaker, Dr Muhammad Indagi-Ishaq, encouraged stakeholders to work towards boosting sugar production. He highlighted the factors affecting sugarcane farming and sugar production among industries in Nigeria. Indagi-Ishaq spoke on the theme, "Renewed Hope of Boosting Sugarcane Value Chain from Farm to Factory for Sustainable Industrial Development".
Prof. Aleruchi Chuku, Provost, College of Health and Sciences, represented Prof. Shehu Abdul-Rahman at the conference. Prof. Usman Dakwes, Director of Dangote Sugar Research Centre, also stated that the conference would boost sugarcane and sugar production in the country.
The Sugar Technologists Society will invest in research to boost sugarcane production and improve the income of farmers in Nigeria. The research outcome from this partnership will be first implemented at the Dangote Sugar Refinery in Tunga, Awe Local Government Area, Nasarawa State to prove its significance in ensuring better yield.
Prof. Gbadebo Olaoye, the National President, STSN, stated that the conference aims to enhance collaboration for improved sugarcane production toward achieving self-sufficiency for domestic use and export. He also mentioned that the conference is a call to action for collective design of a future where Nigeria's sugarcane industry is not just surviving, but thriving.
