SUVs' Surge in Germany: Popularity Triples by 2025 Despite Emission Concerns

SUVs are surging in popularity in Germany, with their market share set to triple by 2025. However, opinions on these vehicles are divided, with concerns about emissions and costs.

The SUV market share in Germany has soared from 8.3% in 2013 to an expected 33% in 2025. This growth is driven by younger generations who prefer their higher seating position and better visibility, with 50% of people citing these as key attractions.

However, 52% of Germans dislike SUVs due to their space requirements in cities. Additionally, 49% are concerned about high fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, while 40% cite high purchase costs as a drawback. The German public is split in their opinion, with 31% viewing SUVs negatively and 31% positively.

Mercedes-Benz has responded to this trend with the all-electric GLC, debuting at the 2025 Munich Motor Show. This innovative SUV boasts a unique illuminated grille and an impressive range of up to 443 miles. SUVs now account for nearly half (49.5%) of newly registered electric cars in Germany this year. They are particularly popular among households with minor children and high-income individuals.

Germans are open to higher parking fees for SUVs, with 55% able to imagine such a measure. 29% support this in all cities, while 10% only in large cities. However, 32% reject higher fees as unfair and prefer less drastic increases than in Paris.

SUVs' popularity in Germany is undeniable, with a projected market share of 33% by 2025. Despite concerns about emissions, costs, and city space, many Germans appreciate their higher seating position and visibility. The introduction of electric SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz GLC may help address some of these concerns, but opinions remain divided, and parking fees could be a contentious issue.
