Sweden earmarks more than half a billion dollars for Ukraine's military aid
Stockholm has earmarked SEK 4.8 billion (approximately $504 million) for Ukraine's defense enhancement, as per a government statement released on May 26. The decision, approved on May 22, instructs the Swedish Armed Forces to participate in multilateral funds and initiatives designed to bolster Ukraine's defensive capabilities.
This contribution forms part of Sweden's 19th aid package for Ukraine, announced earlier this year. Sweden will funnel funds to several international coalitions within the Ukrainian Defense Contact Group (UDCG), or the Ramstein format, to support Ukraine's defense.
The breakdown includes a donation of SEK 100 million ($10.5 million) to the demining coalition for acquiring equipment, SEK 300 million ($31.5 million) to the drone coalition, SEK 50 million ($5.2 million) to the maritime security coalition for the training of Ukrainian Navy personnel, and SEK 30 million ($3.1 million) to the security and IT management coalition for creating the Ukrainian Delta system.
An additional SEK 1 billion ($105 million) will be channeled through the Danish model of arms procurement, meaning direct purchases from the Ukrainian defense industry. Furthermore, SEK 418 million ($43.9 million) will be allocated for armored vehicle acquisitions, SEK 550 million ($57.7 million) for ammunition procurement initiatives, and over SEK 1 billion ($105 million) for the purchase of air defense systems and long-range drones.
