Taipei's MRT expansion, connecting New Taipei City and Taoyuan, will officially launch in 2026.
The Sanying MRT Line, a key public transportation project in New Taipei City, is undergoing an extension that will connect with the Green Line of the Taoyuan Metro. This three-station, 4.03-kilometer extension will run from Yingtao Fude Station (LB12) in New Taipei City to Dannan Station (LB14) in Bade District, Taoyuan.
The central government has pledged NT$9.12 billion towards the cost of this extension, while the total budget for the project is estimated to be approximately NT$16.06 billion (US$496 million). The statement about the extension was issued by the New Taipei City Metro Corp.
The core Sanying Line, a 14.29-kilometer system with 12 stations, was first approved in 2015, and construction began in 2016. It is scheduled to open in March 2026, with track work, safety testing, and noise reduction measures nearing completion. The core Sanying Line is designed to shorten commute times across southwestern New Taipei City.
The extension, expected to start construction by late 2026, follows the completion of the core Sanying Line. Together, these two sections form a long-term effort to build a seamless metro network in northern Taiwan.
Final system integration for the core Sanying Line is expected by late 2025. The integration of the Sanying Line extension with the Taoyuan Metro's Green Line will enhance the integration of public transit networks in the region. This connection enables cross-city metro travel and reduces intermodal transfer friction between New Taipei and Taoyuan transit networks.
As of June 2025, the main project's construction progress was at 84.19% and on track for completion in 2025. No specific completion date was cited for the Bade extension separately, but it is part of the overall project timeline aimed by mid-2020s.
In summary: - Core Sanying Line: 14.3 km, 12 stations, construction started 2016, expected open 2025. - Extension to Bade, Taoyuan: 4.03 km, 3 stations, cost ~NT$16.06 billion (US$496 million). - Integration: Extension connects Sanying Line with Taoyuan Metro Green Line, improving northern Taiwan’s public transit linkages.
