Tesla made a significant stride in the autonomous vehicle industry with the launch of its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, on June 22, 2025. The company initially deployed Model Y vehicles in a geofenced area, operating under a flat fare pricing model [1].

The launch marked a key step towards CEO Elon Musk's goal to shift Tesla's focus towards autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence [5]. Since the launch, Tesla has been actively mapping and validating Austin’s roads for the service [2].

The initial deployment consisted of approximately 10 robotaxis, but Tesla plans a massive expansion of the service area in Austin. The company aims to increase the service area up to 10 times, from about 42 square miles to possibly 450 square miles [3].

Tesla is also preparing for the deployment of the Cybercab, a custom-built autonomous vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals, which Musk has mentioned in the past [6]. The company is already utilizing company-owned Cybertrucks with Full Self-Driving (FSD) sensors and validation devices around Austin, suggesting these will be integrated into the robotaxi fleet soon [2].

It's worth noting that Tesla's robotaxis in Austin currently operate with human supervision, a safety monitor inside the vehicle. This supervised system is effectively Tesla’s consumer “Supervised Full Self-Driving” technology shifted to the passenger seat [1]. A fully driverless robotaxi service is still forthcoming and dependent on further regulatory and technical progress [4].

The public road test was performed with a Tesla Model Y, which operated without a remote controller [7]. During the test, a Tesla engineer was in the passenger seat of the Model Y [8].

The launch was reported by Bloomberg [9], and Musk's statement about the launch led to a 2.1% increase in Tesla shares in after-hours trading [10]. Austin has formed a task force to liaise with companies like Tesla and Waymo for autonomous vehicle testing [11].
