Thames Water Launches Major Sewer Mapping Initiative to Reduce Pollution and Flooding

Thames Water has launched a major procurement initiative to map sewer networks across Greater London and the Thames Valley. The project, divided into three lots, aims to enhance sewer maps, reduce blockages, flooding, and pollution, and support the company's Pollution Incident Reduction Plan (PIRP) during AMP8.

The initiative, set to run for an initial four-year term with potential extensions, involves three key components. Lot 1, Aerial Mapping, requires surveying 2,484 km2 using manned aircraft, delivering georeferenced 2D, oblique 2D, and 3D imagery in phases by 2028. Lot 2, Asset Detection, focuses on identifying various assets such as manholes and gullies, with confidence grading. Lot 3 - Sewer Inferencing involves semi-automated and automated inference of unmapped sewers, targeting at least 80% accuracy.

One supplier will be appointed for each lot, with Thames Water potentially limiting awards to one lot per supplier. The deadline for requests to participate is 10:00 a.m. on 3 October 2025, with award decisions anticipated in February 2026. Improving sewer maps will strengthen Thames Water's response times and mitigate environmental impacts.

Thames Water's sewer mapping initiative is a significant step towards reducing blockages, flooding, and pollution. With the procurement divided into three lots, the company aims to appoint one supplier per lot, fostering specialized expertise. The project's success will support Thames Water's Pollution Incident Reduction Plan during AMP8.
