The Landesbetrieb für Straßenbau und Verkehr (LBV), or the state agency responsible for road construction and traffic, shelled out approximately 7.4 million euros on slip-resistant roads and cycle paths. Yet, with this year's mild winter, that figure was halved compared to the 2023/24 season.
But even with fewer snow days, freezing rain in the early mornings gave the road maintenance crews a run for their money. In total, a whopping 15,700 tonnes of salt and around 5,700 tonnes of salt brine were spread on roads and cycle paths, requiring a combined 15,135 working hours.
A fleet of 264 vehicles - 100 from the LBV itself and 164 from private providers - were in action during the winter season. The material costs for salt and salt brine added up to nearly 2 million euros, and the deployment of spreading vehicles, equipment, and other operating costs amounted to 2.9 million euros.
External companies pocketed 1.9 million euros for their services, while the working hours were valued at 645,000 euros. In the previous winter season, the consumption of salt was around 26,400 tonnes and of brine about 10,800 tonnes.
