In today's modern landscape, adaptability isn't just a temporary response to the COVID-19 pandemic or a perk for employees. It's evolved into an indispensable leadership skill. When you truly embrace flexibility, it becomes an integral part of your corporate culture, shaping your leadership style and workplace policies, and you'll witness the remarkable transformation it brings.

Employees start feeling undervalued once their contributions feel secondary to profit margins. This shift in perspective can turn your employees from dedicated team members into job seekers looking for better opportunities. A major contributor to this shift is economic pressure, leading many employees to prioritize higher salaries and immediate financial benefits, sometimes at the expense of job satisfaction and long-term career growth. This short-sighted approach further weakens the trust and loyalty within organizations.

The gig economy, along with a rise in entry-level contract work, has resulted in less job security for numerous employees. They trade this security for the allure of flexibility. Even if they lose some benefits, workers find this sacrifice acceptable, especially since these benefits might have never been offered in the first place.

Back in 2015, when I founded BetterCertify, I observed a trend in successful models. Companies were using compensation as a tool to trim costs. Instead of reducing their employment base through layoffs or dismissals, they were reducing employees' individual compensation through benefit cuts, pay raises, and pausing 401(k) contributions. This strategy often fuels employee dissatisfaction, fosters high turnover rates, and results in lost revenue.

To foster a company culture that values employees, I emphasize the importance of creating individualized, flexible benefit plans. These plans cater to the diverse needs of your workforce while effectively utilizing available resources. Investing in your staff's well-being and job satisfaction is essential if you aim for their long-term success as well as the success of your organization. Treating human capital as equally important as physical capital is a must.

My belief in creating a successful and humane organization guides my journey. While profit margins are undeniably crucial, they should never serve as the sole purpose of a company's existence. Attempting to cut non-executive employee compensation while expecting the same output will undoubtedly result in disappointment.

Flexibility transcends a set of rules; it's a mindset. Embracing that mindset, employees and leaders alike can thrive in a less rigid work environment. The current circumstances of a male subordinate provide a perfect example. His wife is expecting, and our state offers 12 weeks of paternity benefits. As his employer, I must examine how I can support him and his family during this time. Sometimes, leaders must make sacrifices, and it's crucial to remember that at the end of the day, you're there to care for people.

Flexibility plays a crucial role in retaining top talent, fostering gender equality, and bolstering employee well-being. By viewing employees as individuals first, leaders can orchestrate cultures that are not only productive but also inclusive and nurturing.
