Avoiding Traffic Jams During Summer Weekends in Germany: ADAC's Travel Advice

For those planning summer getaways in Germany, the Automobile Club of Germany (ADAC) has issued a warning about anticipated traffic congestion during peak holiday weekends. Here are some tips to help navigate the busy roads and ensure a smoother journey.

According to ADAC, the best alternative travel days to avoid traffic jams during summer weekends are typically Saturdays and Sundays outside the peak hours and particularly avoiding the main holiday weekends. Departing on Friday afternoons before the holiday weekend starts or traveling back on Sunday evening or Monday can help avoid peak congestion. Mid-week travel, such as Tuesday through Thursday, tends to see lighter traffic compared to weekends.

Additionally, traveling early in the morning or late at night can help mitigate traffic jams. However, ADAC warns about frequent delays and traffic jams at fixed border posts due to increased border controls since 2024-2025, which can further impact travel times especially near borders with Austria, Poland, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic.

The ADAC suggests, if possible, to travel between Tuesday and Thursday to avoid heavy traffic. They also recommend using their travel and fuel apps to optimize travel times and avoid congested routes.

In addition to the general traffic guidance for holiday traffic in Germany, traffic congestion is expected on the way home from Europe, on main travel routes to and from the coasts, the Alps, and around major metropolitan areas. Patience is particularly required at the approximately 1250 construction sites nationwide.

It's important to note that specific dates can vary each year depending on regional holidays and events. Always check for updates and plan your route accordingly. Safe travels!
