Train journey trial initiated by Sheikh Mohammed from Dubai to Fujairah
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to revolutionize travel within its borders with the upcoming launch of the Etihad Rail passenger service in 2026. The high-speed rail network, which will connect 11 cities and regions across the UAE, will offer fast, reliable, and eco-friendly travel options[1][3][5].
The first four passenger stations on the UAE-wide line will be located in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah[1]. The trains, capable of speeds up to 200 km/h, will carry up to 400 passengers per train[5]. Travel times will be significantly reduced compared to current road travel. For instance, a trip from Abu Dhabi to Dubai will take approximately 57 minutes, while a journey from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah will take about 105 minutes[1][3].
The route stretches from Al Sila in the western region to Fujairah on the east coast, passing through Al Ruwais, Al Mirfa, Dubai, Sharjah (near University City), Al Dhaid, and Abu Dhabi[1][3][5]. The rail system aims to reduce commute times by 30-40%, decrease traffic congestion, and lower pollution by shifting travelers from road to rail[1][3][5].
Key stations will serve as major hubs in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Fujairah[5]. While the precise locations in Dubai and Abu Dhabi have yet to be revealed, it is believed that the Dubai station will be near Jumeirah Golf Estates[1]. The station in Sharjah will be located close to the airport and University City[1]. The station in Fujairah is situated in the Sakamkam area[1].
The high-speed trains will be electric and environmentally friendly, further supporting the UAE's sustainability goals[2]. Initially, service may be limited to select passengers, such as ADNOC staff, before full public access is granted[3].
Sheikh Mohammed, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, expressed his pride in the Etihad Rail project and the UAE's continuous development of its infrastructure[4]. He described Etihad Rail as a vital economic artery and a key pillar in the UAE's vision for an integrated transport network[4]. The Etihad Rail project is expected to strengthen the UAE's position as a leading logistics hub[6].
In summary, by 2026, Etihad Rail will offer a transformative passenger rail service across the UAE, connecting major urban centers with high-speed, eco-friendly trains on a route extending from Al Sila to Fujairah, cutting travel times substantially and providing new transit options for residents and visitors alike[1][3][5].
