Transactions: Talanx Disposes of its South American Branches
In a strategic move to focus on larger markets and strong market positions, Talanx Retail International division has sold its Argentinian and Uruguayan entities, HDI Seguros Argentina and HDI Seguros Uruguay, to global insurance and financing solutions holding company, BARBUSS S.A. This follows an earlier divestment from their small operation in Ecuador in February 2025.
In 2024, both entities had 148 and 46 employees respectively. The Argentinian operation generated a gross premium volume of ARS 87,708m (EUR 86m), while the Uruguayan entity recorded a gross premium volume of UYU 1,628m (EUR 36m). HDI Seguros Argentina and HDI Seguros Uruguay, previously part of HDI International AG since 2011, are now owned by BARBUSS S.A.
The sale to BARBUSS is an important step in Talanx Retail International's strategy to build a strong presence and generate profitable growth in Latin America. However, a 10% stake in HDI Seguros Uruguay still remains with Talanx, subject to regulatory proceedings and expected to close in 2025.
Meanwhile, Talanx's Brazilian subsidiary, HDI Seguros S.A., has successfully closed its acquisition of the Liberty Seguros business with retail customers and small to mid-sized enterprises in Brazil. This move is expected to strengthen HDI's market position in Brazil, reaching rank 7 in the P&C and rank 4 in the motor insurance market.
In addition, HDI International AG, a subsidiary of Talanx Group, has acquired the retail business of Sompo Seguros S.A. in Brazil, further strengthening its operations in its core market. This acquisition enables HDI Seguros S.A. in Brazil to gain scale in motor and to diversify into non-motor P&C and Life Protection business.
The sale of HDI Seguros S.A. to Grupo Financiero Atlántida enables Talanx Retail International to consolidate its portfolio in Latin America and focus on its largest operations. The transaction is expected to close in the future, and the financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.
Talanx Retail International concentrates on non-life and life insurance services for retail and commercial customers outside Germany, with European operations in Poland, Türkiye, and Italy, and Latin American operations in larger markets such as Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia. This strategic decision to exit smaller-scale operations in countries where Talanx sees limited growth potential is a clear indication of the division's focus on optimizing and scaling its Latin American portfolio by focusing on larger markets and strengthening competitive positions rather than maintaining smaller-scale operations in less profitable regions.
