Transforming leadership at TriMet: Two new additions announced to the executive team

TriMet, Portland's regional public transit system, has made significant changes to its executive leadership team. Inessa M. Vitko and Mary L. Hill, both former employees of TriMet, have returned to the agency and have been promoted to key positions.

Vitko, who joined TriMet as a training services administrator in 2006, has been appointed as the new Chief Operations Officer. Hill, who started at TriMet as a bus operator in 2003, has been promoted to the position of Executive Director of Transportation.

Before their return to TriMet in the 2020s, both Vitko and Hill gained additional experience at C-TRAN. They began their professional careers with TriMet and have backgrounds in public transportation and transit planning.

Vitko expressed her gratitude for being part of an invested and dedicated leadership team at TriMet. She looks forward to navigating the path ahead and contributing to TriMet's future. Hill, on the other hand, emphasized the opportunities for growth and the importance of supporting women and people of color in leadership at TriMet. She expressed her excitement about continuing her journey with TriMet in her new role.

These promotions are part of TriMet's focus on improving fiscal efficiency and stewardship. The agency announced a large-scale effort to reduce costs due to a significant and growing budget gap and impending fiscal cliff. The changes in TriMet's executive leadership team are among the many steps the agency is taking to achieve its financial goals, which include aiming to achieve a balanced budget by July 2028.

Sam Desue Jr., TriMet's General Manager, stated that adjustments at the highest level of management are being made as part of this goal. Hill was formerly TriMet's senior director of operations command center and rail operations, while Vitko previously held the position of a training services administrator at TriMet.

The promotions of Vitko and Hill mark a new chapter for TriMet. With their extensive experience and dedication, they are poised to lead TriMet towards a more efficient and sustainable future. Both Vitko and Hill have shown their commitment to TriMet and are eager to contribute to its growth and success.
