The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has announced that it will be closing Line 1 (Yonge-University) subway for several weekends in July 2025, as part of its ongoing maintenance and upgrade work. The closures will affect service between various stations, and the TTC has outlined several alternative transportation options to ensure transit service continuity.

During the planned weekend closures, a frequent shuttle bus service will replace subway service on the closed segments, stopping at each affected station along the route. For example, on July 12, shuttle buses will cover the segment between Finch and Eglinton stations, with North York Centre and Lawrence stations closed during this time. On July 13, shuttles will cover from St Clair West to St Andrew stations, with stations in between served by these buses. On the weekend of July 19-20, shuttle buses will replace subway service between Lawrence West and St Andrew stations, with several stations (Dupont, Museum, Queen’s Park, St Patrick, Osgoode) closed during this time.

For stations closed during the weekend shutdowns, the TTC advises specific surface transit connections. From St Clair West Station, passengers can take the 512 St Clair streetcar eastbound to St Clair Station. From Queen’s Park Station, passengers can take the 506 Carlton streetcar eastbound to College Station. From St Patrick Station, passengers can take the 505 Dundas streetcar eastbound to Dundas Station. From Osgoode Station, passengers can take the 501 Queen streetcar eastbound to Yonge and Adelaide. Passengers can either walk two minutes south to King Station or five minutes north to Queen Station for Line 2 connections, with Bloor-Yonge Station serving as the transfer point.

Wheel-Trans service will also be available for customers requiring assistance, coordinated by TTC customer service staff at affected stations. All open stations during closures will remain available for ticket purchases and PRESTO card loading to facilitate transfers to surface routes and shuttle buses.

The TTC did not clarify whether the 38 full weekend closures announced in January are in addition to the regular weekend closures already scheduled. The TTC also did not provide details on which specific state-of-good-repair work will be done during the upcoming weekend closures. Regular subway service will resume after each weekend closure.

The TTC announced the closure in an alert and advised passengers to plan their trips accordingly. Passengers are encouraged to check the TTC website or sign up for alerts to stay informed about service disruptions and updates. The TTC is committed to maintaining transit service continuity during maintenance and upgrades on Line 1 over the weekends in July 2025, with TTC staff available for customer assistance throughout.

  1. The 'media' can inform the public that during the Line 1 subway closures in July 2025, a shuttle bus service will replace service on the closed segments, with specific surface transit connections available for stations closed during the weekend shutdowns.
  2. Stock market 'finance' analysts may be interested to know that the Toronto Transit Commission did not clarify whether the 38 full weekend closures announced in January are in addition to the regular weekend closures, which could potentially impact the pattern of public-transit usage.
  3. Lastly, the 'law' may become involved if the TTC fails to ensure 'transportation' service continuity or if they incur any legal obligations due to service disruptions during the Line 1 maintenance and upgrade work in July 2025.
