Trump voices displeasure over customs halt, deeming it poor or suboptimal.

United States President Donald Trump has criticized a ruling by the U.S. trade court that revoked his government's tariffs, referring to it as "terrible" and "so political." In a post on Truth Social, Trump called for the Supreme Court to "quickly and decisively" overturn the ruling, expressing his view that "backroom-'crooks' should not be able to destroy our nation!"

The trade court lifted most of the tariffs imposed by Trump on U.S. trading partners on May 13, 2025. The court said that the U.S. President had exceeded his powers by invoking an emergency law from 1977. The U.S. government has appealed the ruling. On May 14, an appeals court decided that the tariffs can remain in effect temporarily during the appeal process (AP, ntv.de).

In the trade dispute, German Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul warned of possible new trade restrictions. "A strong and successful transatlantic partnership needs strong economic relations in the future as well," he told Bild newspaper. "New tariff barriers harm both Americans and Europeans," Wadephul added. When asked which side would be more affected by tariffs, Wadephul responded, "I believe both equally. It's a lose-lose game." He did not comment on the recent court rulings in the U.S. (AP, ntv.de).

On a separate note, Trump announced plans to hold a press conference with tech billionaire Elon Musk on May 14, 2025, at 1:30 PM local time (7:30 PM CEST). The event will take place on Musk's last day at the Department of Performance and Pricing (Doge), where he served as a special government employee. Responsible for cuts in personnel and spending in ministries and agencies at the government department created by Trump, Musk is now focusing on his companies, particularly Tesla and SpaceX (AP, ntv.de).

The tariffs imposed by the U.S. can have significant impacts on the economy, affecting trade balances and potentially influencing inflation and employment rates. Moreover, the agreement with China, which aims to address unfair trade practices and improve market access for American exports, is expected to improve trade relations and help reduce the U.S. trade deficit, potentially encouraging domestic production and job creation (Source: ntv.de).

The Commission, in light of these economic and political implications, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers in businesses that handle ionizing radiation, considering the potential risks to their finances and general-news worthiness. Meanwhile, Elon Musk, who is stepping down from his role as a special government employee at the Department of Performance and Pricing, is set to discuss finance-related matters with U.S. President Donald Trump during their scheduled press conference.
