Typhoon Matmo Batters Vietnam, PM Urges Vigilance as Heavy Rain Continues
Vietnam has witnessed an unprecedented surge in natural disasters from January to September, with 14 typhoons and tropical depressions striking the East Sea. The latest, Typhoon Matmo, has brought heavy rains causing damage to Vân Hò Regional General Hospital in Sơn La province. Authorities are now reviewing residential areas for prompt relocation from high-risk zones.
The provinces expected to bear the brunt of Matmo's heavy rain include Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, and many others. All ministries and localities have been ordered to report to the Prime Minister daily on flood prevention and response efforts. The PM has directed relevant bodies to coordinate support for localities and people affected by the floods.
Deputy PM Trà̂̀̀n Hồng Hà continues to oversee ministries and localities in managing forecasts and implementing prevention and recovery measures. PM Chính has also suggested allowing online classes for students in hard-hit areas to ensure safety. The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment is closely monitoring developments and providing regular updates on rainstorms and landslides.
Though Typhoon Matmo has weakened into a tropical depression, it is still expected to bring very heavy rain, with some areas receiving over 300mm. PM Phạm Minh Chính has urged ministries and provinces to remain vigilant and update residents on Matmo's condition to effectively implement preventive and response measures.
