U.S. Recall Volume of Products Overseen by Sedgwick Reaches Three-Year Low Quarterly

In the second quarter of 2023, the U.S. witnessed a mixed picture in terms of product recalls, as reported by the U.S. Product Safety and Recall Index, published by Sedgwick.

The number of recall events in Q2 2023 reached 861, marking the highest quarterly total in over a year. However, the total number of units affected was lower compared to the same period in 2022, with 211.25 million units impacted in the first half of 2023, compared to 384.17 million in the first half of 2022.

The decline in the number of units recalled but increase in recall events in Q2 2023 may be attributed to factors such as smaller batch production, earlier defect detection, and a heightened culture of recall readiness.

Automotive recalls saw a 14.4% increase from Q1 2023, with 246 recalls issued by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration. The average recall size for automotive products was 29,925 units. In contrast, consumer product recalls increased by 7.9% from Q1 2023, reaching 109, the highest quarterly total since 2008. The number of units recalled in consumer product recalls was 12.21 million, a 163.2% increase from Q1 2023.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) food recalls saw a 12.6% increase from Q1 2023, with 143 recalls. Despite this increase, the number of units impacted by FDA food recalls in Q2 2023 was 14.32 million, a 79.6% decrease from Q1 2023.

The report also highlights that only five quarters in the past five years have seen fewer than 100 million units recalled, including Q2 2023. Furthermore, Q2 2023 had one of only nine quarters since 1997 to have more than 100 consumer product recalls.

It is worth noting that no specific information was found in the search results about which companies or organizations caused the most impacts in food recall volumes in the second quarter of 2023.

The U.S. Product Safety and Recall Index provides comprehensive data on product recalls in the U.S., including automotive, consumer products, and food recalls, aiming to help organisations and consumers stay informed and prepared.
