U.S. Retail Landscape Shifts: Top 100 Retailers 2025
The retail landscape in the U.S. has seen some shifts in the 2025 Top 100 Retailers list, compiled by Kantar. While the top 13 companies remain unchanged from 2024, there's been movement among the rest, influenced by sales growth, store expansion, and market trends like stabilization in pet ownership levels.
Walmart continues its dominance, topping the list with $568.70 billion in U.S. retail sales, marking a 7% growth. Amazon.com follows closely with $273.66 billion and 9% growth. Other major players like Target and Walgreens Boots Alliance also maintain their positions, with Target dropping from No. 7 to No. 8, allowing Walgreens to move up to No. 7.
Among the notable changes, Best Buy slipped two places to No. 18 due to a 5% decrease in U.S. sales and a 0.8% decrease in U.S. stores. Meanwhile, Dollar General (No. 17) expanded its reach with a 3% increase in U.S. stores and 5% sales growth, outperforming Dollar Tree (No. 19). Rite Aid experienced a significant drop, falling from No. 29 to No. 40 due to a 22% decline in U.S. sales and a 25.5% decline in U.S. stores. Signet Jewelers (No. 69) also faced challenges, with a 5% decline in U.S. retail sales attributed to changes in jewelry buying habits.
Despite the shifts, the top 13 companies in the 2025 list remain the same as in 2024, reflecting the stability of the retail market's core. However, changes in consumer behavior and market dynamics continue to impact individual retailers' performances, as seen in the cases of Best Buy, Dollar General, Rite Aid, and Signet Jewelers.
