In the ongoing face-off between global trade and protectionist policies, Japan's auto industry is feeling the heat. A chat with Taro Saito, chief economist of NLI Research Institute, reveals a 3.4% decrease in export volume. But it's not all doom and gloom – the industry is taking a defensive stance by drastically cutting prices to counteract the additional costs of tariffs without alienating their loyal customers in the US.

The war of tariffs between Donald Trump and nearly every other country includes Japan. The base tariff rate of 10% stands tall, with a whopping 25% added for automobiles, while steel and aluminum suffer a 50% surcharge. Even though Trump has hinted at raising the general tariff rate to 24%, the damage has already been done, particularly in the automotive sector.

Japan, a faithful ally to the US, finds itself in a delicate spot. The land of the rising sun is highly dependent on exports. The automotive industry held a significant 30% share of its exports to the US last year, and back home, it accounts for 8% of all jobs. This sector is the spearhead in Japan's combat against the tariffs' onslaught.

Unfortunately, the effects have started to ripple through other sectors, too. Exports to the US, covering all industries, saw a roughly 11% decline in May, as per official figures. Likewise, US imports took a hit, dipping by 13.5%.

The US and Japan are currently locked in negotiations, trying to find a solution for this tariff quandary. However, despite a meeting between US President Trump and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba at the recent G7 summit in Canada, the two leaders have yet to find common ground. "Since there are still differences of opinion, we have not reached an agreement," Ishiba shared after the talks.

Japan, with its automotive sector in distress, is hoping for a timely resolution, as tensions in the US-Japan trade relationship continue to rise.
