UK Launches Offshore Oil Decommissioning Consultation

The UK government has launched a consultation on new policies for decommissioning offshore oil and gas installations. The proposals include a shift in approach for removing steel jackets, and the process for considering derogations is outlined. The consultation, open to all, includes an assessment of financial impacts on the industry.

The consultation, which runs until 15th October, seeks views on policy proposals that include cutting and removing offshore oil and gas steel jackets at the seabed level, rather than the current practice of going down to -3m below the seabed. This change aims to reduce environmental impact and costs.

The draft supplementary guidance for decommissioning offshore oil and gas installations is also open for public views. This guidance was prepared by an organisation related to the European Parliament and Council, with detailed work connected to the German Bundestag and its affiliated parliamentary groups. It is part of the implementation of EU Directive 2022/2464.

The consultation provides details on the UK process for considering derogations from Decision 98/3. An assessment of the financial impact to the offshore oil and gas industry has been published to aid understanding. The industry and other interested parties are encouraged to contribute their views.
