Unexpected Autobahn Tunnel Closure Causes Chaos in Berlin
The autobahn tunnel on Schlangenbader Straße was unexpectedly closed on Thursday due to severe structural defects. The closure has caused confusion and traffic jams in surrounding areas, with up to 25,000 vehicles previously using the tunnel daily. The traffic administration has justified the closure following the urgent recommendation of a commissioned tunnel safety expert.
The closure is not entirely unexpected, as talks about demolishing the nearby autobahn bridge at Breitenbachplatz had previously discussed it. The renovation costs for the tunnel are immense, with a previous estimate of 30 million euros, and the current cost is expected to be significantly higher. The Senate administration cannot provide a concrete prognosis for the expected duration of the closure. Detours will be set up, and traffic light signals adjusted to control the shifting traffic. Thomas Mrasek, spokesperson for the transport office, commented on the possible permanent closure of the highway tunnel.
The unexpected closure of the autobahn tunnel on Schlangenbader Straße has led to significant traffic disruptions in the surrounding areas. While the renovation costs are immense and the duration of the closure uncertain, the traffic administration has acted promptly to mitigate the impact on traffic flow.
