Urgent Call for Delisting of Shein and Temu Websites: "A Crisis" Stated by Commerce Alliance

"Sound the alarm!" Yohann Petiot, head honcho at Alliance du Commerce, shouted on Tuesday over our digital airwaves, as major French retail coalitions plead with the administration to boot platforms Shein and Temu from the dancefloor, following a draft law's heat.

: "Anti-fast-fashion law: Shein shells out for a takedown on the bill, slides it to legislators in the name of 'grassroots consumers.' It's a united front against last year's onslaught of 800 million packages, most of which, upon inspection, weren't playing by the rules," Yohann Petiot clarified. These rule-breaking packages allegedly inflict "two stingers," the Alliance du Commerce bigwig stated, hinting at their harm to consumers and our businesses alike. He draws a parallel to a store housing "94% misfits, 66% of which are busted for safety violations." If that store were legislated to shutter, either swiftly, he affirmed. "We'd demand they slam the doors. We're merely asking for a level playing field."

A past precedent, a lesson learned

Yohann Petiot recalls the "disappearing act four years ago" of the Wish platform as "a death blow to competitors". The platform lingers on search engines but, "hasn't meant squat since," according to him. "Once you're erased for a spell, you're unhittable for consumers, and that's the big Kahuna. It's all about security and fair play." The head of Alliance du Commerce advocates for "giving our regulating authorities some extra muscle."

Yohann Petiot raises the "ticking time bomb looming over our stakeholders". "It's crucial to grasp that China is the globe's factory. We can't let it turn into the planet's department store tomorrow." He estimates that "we can no longer tolerate these packages jetting in on airplanes," adding that "600 nightly flyovers don't toe our line." "We're in the hunt for fair competition that plays by the rules. That’s not the case here," Yohann Petiot underlines. "We demand action."

A growing problem

Investigations have shed light on various compliance concerns about Shein and Temu:

  1. Breach of EU consumer protection laws: Shein allegedly engages in deceptive practices by offering inflated discounts[1].
  2. Poor customer service: Temu reportedly manipulates processes to prevent customers from lodging complaints[1].

As for the non-compliant packages from these platforms, specifics are scarce in public records. Common compliance issues in the e-commerce realm embrace:

  1. Consumer protection: Ensuring products meet safety and quality standards.
  2. Customs and tariffs: Ensuring proper declarations and payment of duties on imports.
  3. Data security: Protecting user data and respecting privacy laws.
  4. Environmental impact: Complying with regulations related to packaging, waste, and environmental impact.

With limited specifics from the French retail federations, it's likely calls for these platforms' delisting stem from broader concerns over compliance and consumer protection. Navigating local laws and regulations amidst the boom of e-commerce platforms can result in collisions with local retailers and regulatory bodies.

"The head of Alliance du Commerce, Yohann Petiot, emphasizes the need for the government to take action against platforms like Shein and Temu, citing past precedents such as the disappearing act of Wish four years ago as a death blow to competitors. He advocates for giving regulatory authorities more power to ensure a level playing field in the business world and protect consumers."

"In light of investigations revealing breaches of EU consumer protection laws by Shein and poor customer service by Temu, as well as concerns about non-compliant packages, Yohann Petiot underscores the importance of addressing these issues to maintain fair competition in the e-commerce industry, focusing on consumer protection, customs and tariffs, data security, and environmental impact."
